Female mosquitoes locate their prey through scent; they easily detect the carbon dioxide in exhaled breath and expelled through the skin pores, as well as the scent of sweat. Some humans attract more mosquitoes than others -- if you are a male, overweight and have type 'O' blood, you have a higher chance of being bitten.
